Adiponectin Found In Short Supply in Overweight People

Adiponectin, a protein in the blood, has anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic and insulin-sensitizing properties. Metabolic changes that occur in type 2 diabetes, obesity and atherosclerosis, increasing insulin sensitivity and lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, are linked with adiponectin.

An analysis of past studies, performed by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Arizona, in Tucson, published in the May-June 2013 Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, looked at clinical trials of yoga as an intervention for weight loss or as a means of risk reduction or treatment for obesity and the diseases in which it is a causal factor. Syndrome X, for example, is a pre-diabetes condition characterized by elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and body mass index. They found, “Overall, therapeutic yoga programs are frequently effective in promoting weight loss and/or improvements in body composition.”
